Dehradun, May 23 (KNN) The Uttarakhand Electricity Regulatory Commission (UERC) will have an Ombudsman for redressal of consumer complaints which may range from power disruption, over-charging by faulty meters or the low quality of power supply.

According to section 42(6) of Electricity Act, 2003, any consumer, who is aggrieved by non-redressal of his grievances under sub-section (5), may make a representation for the redressal of his grievance to an authority to be known as Ombudsman to be appointed or designated by the State Commission.

The Ombudsman will settle the grievance of the consumer within such time and in such manner as may be specified by the State Commission, an official notification said.

Recently, a high level committee recommended scrapping 23 of 24 projects valued at about 20,000 crore, leaving power firms in tense as they foresee trouble for upcoming as well as existing hydropower plants in the state.

In this context, the regulatory body is looking for an eminent person for appointment as Electricity Ombudsman an appellate authority under section 42(6) of the Electricity Act, 2003 for hearing appeals against the orders issued by the Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum (CGRF), said a notification.

UERC is seeking applications from retired judges who served at least as a member for full term in any regulatory body or a retired civil servant not below the rank of secretary to the government or a person has worked for at least three years as Chief Executive or functional Director of any electricity utility.

During the first four months of this year, Uttarakhand has had low key business in trade and industries thanks to the government’s tardy rehabilitation work leaving the units in the services sector like the small tour and travel operators, who completely depend on the Char Dham Yatra Season for their livelihood, out of bookings.

According to a study conducted last year, tourism sector witnessed a direct employment loss of about 1,80,000 people due to floods last year. (KNN/ST)
