Exploring possibilities to extend Chennai-Vishakhapatnam Industrial Corridor to Kolkata: Sitharaman

New Delhi, May 24 (KNN) The proposed Chennai Vishakhapatnam Industrial corridor is likely to be further expanded to Kolkata via Odisha, Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry recently announced during a press meet.

The Minister informed that she have received representations from various stakeholders including some VIP delegations for the demand of extension of the corridor, responding to which the government is favourable inclined towards extending the Industrial Corridor up to Kolkata.

Also earlier this year the Odisha government proposed to extend the Chennai Vishakhapatnam Industrial corridor, with Sitharaman signalling it in green light, there is possibility of the project being implemented soon.

Also the Industrial Corridor earlier this year attracted a pact worth 375 million dollars from the Asian Development Bank to work on the 800 km long development project between Vishakhapatnam and Chennai.

The Vishakhapatnam-Chennai industrial Corridor also known as Vizag-Chennai Industrial Corridor is a part of the East Coast Economic Corridor (ECEC) which is also the first coastal corridor in the country.

The project was launched with the intention to enhance industrial growth in the region and to promote employment opportunities and generate high quality jobs for the youth in the regions that the corridor covers.
