Jalandhar, Jul 15 (KNN)  India’s sports goods manufacturers' loss was gain for  Chinese and Pakistani firms as the orders for FIFA World Cup were diverted to the neighbouring countries, because of lack of skilled labour.

Taking the example of the Football World Cup, Chairman, Sports Goods Manufacturers and Exporters Association (SGMEA) Arvind Abrol said the manufacturers were forced to refuse huge orders due to non-availability of workers owing to which they were diverted to China and other countries.

He further stated that there is immediate need for the establishment of Skill Development Centre for imparting training to the workers as there is extreme dearth of skilled labour in the sports goods manufacturing industry, as a result of which major international orders are being diverted to China and Pakistan.

Members of SGMEA met here today under the Chairmanship of newly appointed Arvind Abrol to discuss the problems faced by the sports goods industry.

Speaking at the event, Abrol also said that the industry has been clamoring for many years for the establishment of Research and Development Institute in Jalandhar exclusively for the Sports Goods industry so that the manufacturers could produce world class products and could compete with China and Pakistan on international level who are already ruling the international markets and even have penetrated into Indian domestic market.

He said that the Indian Sports Goods Manufacturing Industry was on the verge of virtual closure.

On the other hand, Honorary Secretary of the Association, Mukul Verma, has called for a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for Sports Goods Industry, asking for suitable land around Jalandhar for setting up Special Economic Zone which could provide enormous benefits, enabling the sports goods industry to compete at international level.

He also said that the sports goods industry is facing huge electricity cuts and appealed to the government to restore uninterrupted electricity at the earliest.

Meanwhile, Financial Secretary Pran Chadha has appealed to the government to set up an exhibition centre and also take immediate steps for the restoration of international flights from Amritsar as was done in the past as most of the buyers have been avoiding coming to Jalandhar due to the long journey distance from New Delhi.
“This will give a massive boost not only to the Sports Goods Industry but also to Hand Tools Industry, Leather Industry of Jalandhar and Textile Industry of Amritsar,” Chadha said.

The issue of exporters finding it difficult to get VAT refunds was also brought up.  Not only did the authorities require many documents, they took 3-4 months to process refunds, he said.

The meeting was also attended by Raghunath S. Rana, R.C. Kohli, Vikas Gupta, Rajesh Kharabanda, Sukhwinder Bhaizada, Sanjay Sharma, Tilak Khinder, Jyoti Parkash, Anil Sharma, Manish Mahajan, Kumar Wasan and Vipan Mahajan.  (KNN/ES)
