Panaji, Oct 28 (KNN) Industrialists in Goa said the state electricity department's proposal to hike power tariff in the year 2016-17 would impact their business margins and make it difficult to operate industrial units.

Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) along with Goa state industries association, Confederation of Indian Industries, Goa, and travel and tourism association of Goa have also urged the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) for Goa to give the industry till November 30 to study the proposal and express their opinions.

According to  a media report, in a petition submitted to Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Tuesday, the GCCI, Deputy Director RS Kamat said power is an important part of manufacturing costs and any large and unreasonable variations can spell doom for the industrial consumers.

It is important that the industry studies the business plan in detail and gives its balanced and constructive suggestions on the same, he said.

The industry also questioned the electricity department's hurry to push through major changes in power tariff.

"The industry is also at a loss to understand why the Goa State Electricity Department as well as JERC are in such a tearing hurry to push through major changes in power tariff without giving the consumers a reasonable opportunity to study the proposals," said Kamat.

Industry in Goa over the last few years has been leveraging on successive state governments to keep the power tariff unchanged, complaining about insufficient as well as poor quality of power. (KNN Bureau)
