Govt declares J&K and Ladhak as UT; KNN speaks to industry representatives in J&K

Jammu, Aug 5 (KNN) In a historic move, the Central Government has decided to revoke the Article 370 from Indian Constitution which provides special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The proposal evoked massive protest from the opposition asking Central government to roll back the order.

Making the biggest announcement in Rajya Sabha today, Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the government has decided to repeal Article 370 of the Constitution which grants special status to J&K.

Shah, read out a presidential notification that stated the decision to scrap the contentious Article 370 and to bifurcate the state into two Union territories – Jammu and Kashmir, which will have a legislature, and Ladakh, which will be without a legislature.

According to the Constitution of India, Article 370 provides temporary provisions to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, granting it special autonomy. It gives Jammu and Kashmir its own constitution and decision-making rights for all matters barring defence, communications and foreign affairs.

Speaking with KNN India, President of Bari Brahmana Industries Association (BBIA), Lalit Mahajan said that the move might give boost to the industrialization in Jammu & Kashmir.

He is of the view that for employment generation, industrialization is must and there is a possibility that after this move more investments would come up in J&K.

On declaring J&K as a Union Territory, he is of the opinion that development would now take place and availability of funds from the centre would be more.

Criticizing the move, Former CM Mehbooba Mufti tweeted, "Today marks the darkest day in Indian democracy. Decision of J&K leadership to reject 2 nation theory in 1947 & align with India has backfired. Unilateral decision of GOI to scrap Article 370 is illegal & unconstitutional which will make India an occupational force in J&K."

However, Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, said in tweets: "A historical wrong has been undone today. Article 35A came through the back door without following the procedure under Article 368 of the Constitution of India. It had to go."
