New Delhi, Dec 3 (KNN)  The government has granted 'in-principle' approval to 13 Greenfield Airport projects at: Mopa in Goa, Navi Mumbai, Sindhudurg and Shirdi in Maharashtra, Bijapur, Gulbarga, Hassan and Shimoga in Karnataka, Kannur in Kerala, Dabra in Gwalior, Pakyong in Sikkim, Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh and Karaikal in Puducherry.

Minister of Civil Aviation, Ashok Gajapathi Raju Pusapati informed the Rajya Sabha about this approval on Monday.

What is more important, he also mentioned that the Government of India has granted site clearance to DMIDC the authority for implementation of  Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor, for setting up of a Greenfield Airport near Bhiwadi in Alwar district of Rajasthan.

He also explained that the view on setting up of Greenfield Airport at Jewar, in Greater NOIDA, will be taken after receiving a complete updated proposal from the Government of Uttar Pradesh.

The decision on the Bhiwadi Airport appears to be more political than economic as the Jewar airport is very near to the IT cluster of NOIDA / Greater NOIDA which is already hosting more than 100 large companies and numerous other ITES Companies and call centres.  The distance of the Delhi Airport from the cluster and the congested access roads was always a grievance of the local industry which was lobbying for an airport nearer home.

The site for the airport has already been identified by the UP Government and recently the Union Minister of Tourism, Dr. Sharma, who is also the local M P, announced about the imminent approval of the airport.

More interestingly, one reason cited so far for delay in approval of the Greater NIDA Airport was, the contract with the Delhi International Airport developer, GMR, which prohibits setting up of a new airport within certain distance of the Delhi Airport. How Bhiwadi satisfied that criteria is a question raised by the NOIDA residents.

Pushing the ball in the state government’s court, the Union Aviation Minister also mentioned in the house that the Government of Uttar Pradesh is responsible for further progress in the Jewar project as necessary action for approval from various departments, project development, including financing of the airport project has to be obtained by the respective airport promoter.  (KNN Bureau)
