New Delhi, Jul 15 (KNN) The central government has been implementing the Border Area Development Programme (BADP) through the state governments to promote developmental activities in border areas, said Home Affair Minister Kiren Rijiju.

The developmental activities under BADP are related to infrastructure development such as link roads, employment generation, education, health, drinking water, electricity, agriculture and other allied sectors, an official release said.

The programme is a part of comprehensive approach to the Border Management to meet the special developmental needs of the people living in the remote and inaccessible border areas. It will help filling the region with essential infrastructure through convergence with other central, state and local schemes and participatory approach.

Rijiju said the programme is being implemented in 375 border blocks of 103 border districts in 17 States (including States in the North Eastern region), along the international land borders.

The programme also provides for fast development of villages particularly those located in the remote hilly areas closer to the international land borders through activities like skill development of youth and tourism development to contain migration from the border areas.

From the year 2012 onwards, state governments have been requested to utilize at least 5 per cent of the allocation of the state under BADP for skill development and capacity building of the people living in border areas, added Rijiju. (KNN/ST)
