Mumbai, Nov 11 (KNN) The Government of India along with the UK Government intends to develop world class, eco-friendly infrastructure  along the Bengaluru Mumbai Economic Corridor (BMEC) while will bringing significant benefits in terms of innovation, manufacturing, job creation and resource security to the two states.

BMEC would have an influence area spread across the states of Karnataka and Maharashtra, covering an overall length of approximately 1,000 km.

The economic corridor between Mumbai and Bangalore, is likely to generate investment of over Rs 3 lakh crore and generate around 12 per cent of the country's GDP, creating 2.5 million jobs along the corridor.

“The Bengaluru Mumbai Economic Corridor is thus intended to facilitate development of a well-planned and resource-efficient industrial base served by world-class sustainable connectivity infrastructure, bringing significant benefits in terms of innovation, manufacturing, job creation and resource security to the two states,” BEMC said in a notification.

The main objective of the project is to enable increased investments in manufacturing and industrial activity in the two states.

“Attracting more companies, in particular manufacturing companies will be effective in strengthening global competitiveness of local manufacturers, which may result in accelerated regional development,” the notification added.

The Indian and the British governments have agreed to undertake a joint feasibility study.

Therefore, Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Limited (DMICDC) seeks consultants for preparation of perspective plan for BMEC region.
BMEC wants the consultants to do the market assessment for growth potential for the industries.

“The consultant should look at issues and prospects of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), traditional skill sets of the region, skill gaps with respect to modern manufacturing practices, labour / industrial relations,” added the notification.

The strategy to develop the Corridor is part of the plan to achieve comprehensive, accelerated and sustainable economic development with green technology and regional industrial and urban agglomeration, diffusing the regional population along the length of the Corridor.

“Regional industry agglomeration could be achieved by attracting companies in the value chain of existing companies to the Corridor, attracting particular industries where the Corridor has geographical advantages or has advanced infrastructure for such industries,” BMEC said.

Furthermore, by putting sustainability and resource efficiency at the heart of BMEC development, it has the potential to act as a global exemplar both for commercially viable sustainable development and for attracting investments into manufacturing and clean infrastructure (potable water, clean energy etc).
