Govt to promote business opportunities in North East; scope for MSMEs

New Delhi, Feb 22 (KNN) In a bid to improve the economy of the region, the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) wants to develop and promote business opportunities in the area and make known the advantages of doing so.
Considering the huge pool of natural and human resources, the North East of India has the potential of being an important investment destination and a centre for trade and business.
In this context, DoNER seeks bids from agencies to design and produce an audio visual creative about the economic opportunities and advantages in NER.
Economic opportunities include those in handloom and handicrafts and tourism. Also in the pipeline are projects in roads, power, irrigation and communication sectors.
The objective of the films would be to remove misconceptions and doubts from the average minds and to create a positive image of the region through showcasing the right things before the audience to ward off the evil effects of wrong publicity about the region for a long time in the past.
The North Eastern Region (NER) comprises of the states – Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland Sikkim and Tripura, also known as the seven sisters excluding Sikkim.
The seven states are linked to the rest of India through a 26 km long Siliguri corridor, commonly known as Chicken’s neck, forming an integrated geographical unit.
As much as 98 per cent of NERs border is bounded by international neighbours. Sikkim officially became a part of the North Eastern Region in 2002.
The region offers great diversity – of topography, climatic conditions, language, religion, ethnicity and yet has common developmental challenges.
Other than Assam, the other states are small and hilly. While Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram comprise of tribal communities, the other four States also have a substantial tribal population.
The region is in need of infrastructure, particularly connectivity. As far as the economy is concerned, it is mainly agricultural. Under the circumstances, it has several development challenges.
It is to address these challenges that the Union Government set up the Department of Development of North Eastern Region in 2001 and upgraded it to a Ministry in 2004, to develop the area and unleash the potential of its human and natural resources.
Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region or DoNER, as it is commonly known, advocates the special needs of the region. Its primary role is advocacy to stimulate planning, facilitate and accelerate project / scheme implementation in the NER, including those in the infrastructure sectors of power, irrigation, roads and communications taken up by Central Line Ministries. The Ministry is also addressing state specific infrastructure projects through its scheme of NLCPR. (KNN/ES)
