Meta, Reliance Partner For India's First AI-Enabled Data Centre In Gujarat

Gandhinagar, Jun 11 (KNN) Meta Platforms Inc and Reliance Industries Limited have announced a significant expansion of their strategic partnership, with an agreement for Meta to lease an AI-enabled data centre being built by Reliance in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

The facility, described as India's first built-to-suit AI data centre for a global technology company of this scale, will have an initial capacity of 168 megawatts with options to scale further.

Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, “We’re proud to be working with Reliance to build our first AI-enabled data center in India. This world-class facility in Jamnagar will help us scale our AI infrastructure globally while deepening our long-term investment in India’s economy.”

The facility will be powered by renewable energy and cooled using desalinated seawater, with Meta covering the full cost of energy and water supporting the centre.

The data centre will be complemented by Meta's broader network investments, including Project Waterworth — described as the world's longest subsea cable system — which the company says will bring enhanced connectivity to the region.

Reliance Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani noted, “Building India’s first built-to-suit AI data centre for a global technology leader of Meta’s scale demonstrates India’s readiness to be at the forefront of the global AI revolution.”

Nearly 1 GW of Renewable Energy Contracted

Alongside the data centre announcement, Meta has contracted close to 1 gigawatt of new clean energy in India through agreements with two providers.

CleanMax will supply 837 MW of new solar and wind projects across Rajasthan and Karnataka — taking Meta's cumulative announced capacity with CleanMax to over 900 MW.

Fourth Partner Energy will supply a further 88 MW across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh.

Together with Reliance's renewable energy support for the Jamnagar facility, Meta said these agreements represent a substantive commitment to India's clean energy ecosystem, consistent with its global goal of matching all operations with 100 per cent clean and renewable energy.
