Panchkula, Feb 14 (KNN) With the view to reducing wastage of food items, the Haryana Government has decided to develop infrastructure for post-harvest management. The Post-Harvest Management Centres will help small farmers of vegetables and flowers in reducing wastages of these perishable items.

“…Small Farmer Agri-Business Consortium Haryana (SFACH), Panchkula, has decided to enlist organisations for construction of infrastructure establishment at Post Harvest Management Centre for Fruits and Vegetables at farmer fields and at various Centre of Excellence for Fruits, Flowers and Vegetables etc,” SFACH said today.

The centres will be for collection, grading, sorting, storing, cold store and transfer of horticulture produce specially fruits and vegetables.

According to a recent study, India can save up to 25 million tonnes (MT) of foodgrain, about 10 per cent of its total production, if farmers adopt proper post-harvest management practices.
The post-harvest infrastructure development is a pre-requisite for value addition in agri-exports, it said.

If farmers carry out post-harvest grain management activities thoroughly, it would help avoid significant spillage and wastage at various points from farm to market yard, as the entire produce need not be displayed in bulk and buyers can be allowed to draw samples, the study said.

Meanwhile, the HSIIDC has announced plans to improve basic infrastructure in the industrial estates of Bahadurgarh, Rohtak, and Faridabad. (KNN/SD)
