Ranchi, Feb 19 (KNN) With a view to providing linkage between producers and consumers in India, the Textile Ministry is planning to set up a market development and publicity centre in the mega handloom cluster in Godda and neighbouring districts of Jharkhand.

“The handloom weavers, however, do not have an appropriate feedback on market trend. This, many a time, leads to accumulation of stocks causing thereby a bottleneck in the production-delivery cycle,” Office of Development Commissioner for Handloom said in a notification.

“The centre is aimed at achieving twin objectives of creating awareness among the people about the cluster and cluster products, through organization of a number of marketing and promotional events at strategic locations throughout the country and providing alternative marketing channels to the weavers,” it added.

With regard to this, Development Commissioner for Handloom seeks bids from marketing agencies to set up the centre.

“The Marketing Support Centre shall primarily be involved in different market development activities for handloom products like - organizing and participating in buyer seller meets, reverse buyer seller meets, trade fairs and exhibitions, both in India and abroad; Renting shelf spaces in already established brand stores in domestic markets on pan India basis (Shop-in- Shop); Marketing SPV is required to provide round the year business to at least 500 handlooms,” the notification said.

The agency will also do publicity through print and electronic media, hoarding at strategic locations in the cities etc. It would develop a website where cluster and its products can be displayed and sold.

The Central Government will provide grant up to 80 per cent of the project cost (excluding land cost) and minimum 20 per cent is to be borne by the Special Purpose Vehicle.

The move is towards the development of the mega handloom cluster under the Comprehensive Handlooms Cluster Development Scheme.

“There is absence of market intelligence, poor exposure to new technologies, lack of product diversification, stiff competition with mechanized sector, inadequate infrastructure & common facilities, lack of adequate working capital etc.,” the notification said.

Large handloom clusters, like Godda and neighbouring districts in Jharkhand, require massive investment for its integrated and holistic development. With this background, Comprehensive Handlooms Cluster Development scheme (CHCDS) has been introduced, it added.

This mega handloom cluster covers six districts - Godda, Sahebganj, Pakur, Deoghar, Dumka and Jamtara of Jharkhand. (KNN/SD)
