Bangalore, Oct 17 (KNN) Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Karnataka, Dinesh Gundu Rao said that the state government is planning to make skill training relevant to industry.

At a skill training programme organised by KASSIA in association with KSSIDC under National Urban Livelihood Mission 2015-16 on Friday, he stated that the initiative could drive efficiencies and concrete outcomes in the state and national level skill development programme.

Though a large number of people have been trained under the government’s various skill development schemes, industry continues to face a huge scarcity of skilled labour. In order to bridge this gap, the state government would like to bring together government development institutions, industry associations and industry so that the trainees are provided training that meets the specific requirements of the industry and thus become employable, said Rao.

Director, Municipal Administration, N Manjula explained that funding was available under the National Urban Livelihood Mission at Rs 15,000 plus Rs 3000 as stipend during the training period per candidate.

Interested industry associations could sign up as training partners under the NULM while individuals interested in offering training would have to bid under tender process to become training partners, she said.

KASSIA President VK Dikshit announced that organisation would be starting an employment exchange where unemployed persons could register and they would also be provided training at its KASSIA skill development training centre. The training would be provided in trades that were on demand from industries to enhance the prospects of employability for the trainees.

As per KASSIA’s assessment, there was an immediate requirement for training 50,000 persons in trades identified by the micro and small scale industries, such as IT-related training, CMC machine operations, welding and accounts. KASSIA also planned to open skill development centres in five more district headquarters, in addition to its own centre, he said.

On the occasion, KASSIA also presented a Memorandum to the consumer affairs minister seeking a revision in the pro rata charges levied by Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) for new water and UGD connections on micro and small scale industries, and also requesting to consider micro and small scale enterprises under the low tension category where the tariff is lesser than in the high tension or commercial category where the tariff is higher, while sanctioning new power connections.

The memorandum said the matter of the levy of pro-rata charges on micro and small industries (MSEs), by the BWSSB, for new water and UGD connections has caused a lot of concern in these units due to the illogical and iniquitous nature of the charges.

The paper also pointed out that some of the neighbouring states charge much lower fees for supplying new water connections which work out far more economical  for SMEs as compared to BWSSB. (KNN Bureau)
