Karnataka weavers demand implementation of Handloom Reservation Act

Bengaluru, Nov 5 (KNN)  All India Federation of Handloom Weavers along with prominent personalities of Karnataka have a staged a protest at the town hall here, calling for implementation of the Handloom Reservation Act in the state.

Among those that have lent their support to the cause are former Karnataka Nataka Academy chairman G Srinivasa Kappanna, freedom fighter H S Doreswamy, writers S G Siddaramiah, K Marulasiddappa, theatre person K V Nagaraja Murthy, social activist S R Hiremath and others, according to a report by the New Indian Express.

Up against threat from powerloom weaves, handloom weavers have conveyed their struggles to the authorities, pointing to the fact that handloom is a part of their culture and thousands of families depend on handloom for their livelihood.

In this regard, theatre personality Prasanna has been on fast since October-31 which he ended yesterday after he received an assurance in writing that his demands would be looked into from the state government, the media report said.

Karnataka Handloom Corporation (KHDC), it is reported, will have a high-level meeting under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to deliberate on issues raised, on November 11 here, when all stakeholders will be invited to share their views.

In addition, the Development Commissioner has also assured the handloom weavers that he would look into their issues.  (KNN Bureau)
