Thiruvananthapuram, March 6 (KNN) Kerala Government is establishing a state-of-the-art ‘Life Sciences Park’ in the state capital, which has been conceived as a geographic cluster of industries and R&D institutions in the fields of Biotechnology, Biomedical Devices, Pharmaceuticals and other domains of Life Sciences.

The Park will be established in 75 acres of land located near Kazhakkoottam, one of the fast emerging industrial townships in Thiruvananthapuram.

The first project envisaged in the Life Sciences Park is a New Generation Biotech Incubation Centre, with financial assistance from the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) Government of India.

Possibilities of establishing a ‘Biomedical Research Park’ within the Life Sciences Park, envisaging partnership of one of the national-level R&D institutions, and funding support from Government of India are being explored by KSIDC (Karnataka State Industrial Development Corporation).

KSIDC is in discussion with a few companies which have evinced preliminary interest in setting up their manufacturing/research infrastructure within the Park.

In this context, KSIDC wants to engage a consultancy firm to provide technical consultancy and implementation support services to develop the proposed Park as a leading life sciences destination in India with all infrastructure, support facilities and the right ecosystem to cater to the requirements of large enterprises, start-ups, R&D institutions and researchers in this sector.

In another effort to showcase Kerala as the destination for Clean and Green industries and establishments, KSIDC proposes to encourage clean and green industries and investments across various sectors especially in Food Processing, Organic Fibres, e-Waste, Ayurveda, Handloom, Spice Processing, Marine Processing, Information Technology, Bio technology etc.

The corporation also intends to start “Green financing” to develop and foster growth of Green and Clean industries across these sectors.

KSIDC has proposed to establish a Green Financing Fund for supporting industries engaged in developing green products and services for which it wants to engage an internationally reputed consultant to provide assistance in this endeavour.

Kerala is well known to the outside world as a green destination for tourists to enjoy the nature, clean air and water etc. Kerala also has specific strengths in certain traditional sectors which are green focused like – organic fibres, handloom, spices etc. However, these sectors need to embrace new technologies to grow and they also need to focus on green and clean methods for processing and value addition.

KSIDC is the premier agency of the Government of Kerala for developing and promoting industrial and infrastructure projects in the State of Kerala. Besides attracting domestic and foreign investments to the state, KSIDC plays an important role in stimulating, financing and facilitating the development of medium and large scale industries in the State.  (KNN/SD)
