Kochi, Apr 22 (KNN)  Kochi Municipal Corporation is planning to set up a waste to energy plant to cater to the city and adjoining areas using thermal technologies in gasification or pyrolysis or its advanced variants.

The plant is expected to come up on a five acre plot at Brahmapuram, belonging to the Kochi Corporation for which the spade work has already been done.

According to reports, experts have identified waste-to-energy as the suitable process for the plant, which will be set up in Private-Public-Participation (PPP) mode.

The plant when in operation would require around 300 tonnes of waste a day for generating power; and it would be the responsibility of the local authorities to provide the required raw material which is municipal waste, for the plant.

All municipal waste from Kochi Corporation area and neighbouring local bodies will be treated at the plant.  Significantly, plastic and bio-degradable waste need not be segregated and it can go together into the plant. The presence of plastic in the refuse will help in augmenting power production.

While ash that is generated from the process could be sold, the fly ash generated from the plant could be trapped to avoid any environmental pollution.   (KNN/ES)
