Ghaziabad, Dec 28 (KNN) Alarmed over the rising poor quality of air in Delhi NCR region, both the industry and the residents have raised concerns over the polluting units in the area which do not treat the industrial wastes properly and fails to comply by the pollution board norms.

The residents as well as some of the industrialists in Ghaziabad have pointed that there are some units from which the waste goes directly into the drains without getting treated.

The RWA Federation of Ghaziabad had recently urged IIT-Delhi to conduct a detailed study on the air polluting sources in the region. In a letter to IIT-Delhi, Col. Tejendra Pal Singh Tyagi (retd), president of the Apartment Owners’ Association Federation, said PM1 (particulate matter of size less than 1 micro metre) has been found in the NCR.

Talking to KNN, S K Maheshwari, General Secretary, RWA Federation said, “We had a meeting with the DM. The wastes from some of the units are going directly into the drains. Do avoid coming in the limelight, the industries carry the production work during the odd hours.”

“We have approached the government several times, but they are not interested,” he added.

Meanwhile, the industrialists also share similar concerns with the residents and have admitted that there are some units which do not comply the norms.

Vipin Aggarwal, General Secretary, Sahibabad Industrial Association (SIA) told KNN, “I don’t say that the entire industry is contributing to the pollution. But maybe some of the industries are responsible for pollution. The Government departments should take action against this.”

He said that the industry would stand with the residents on the issue.

“We are also against the polluting units. We don’t want that the industries to create any problem for RWAs or residents. The problems are coming due to the Government departments,” he added.

SIA said that there is also a lapse from the government side as they are allowing such industries to run. “It is not possible without corruption. We are with the RWA if any industry does not follow the norms,” he added.

“No Centralised Treatment Plant (CTP) is being provided by the Government here. The Industrialists have to install the plant from themselves individually. Uttar Pradesh Pollution control board is monitoring the plants.”

RWA Federation said that “Effluent treatment plants are said to be installed in all industries, but we have our doubts if they are in operation round-the-clock.”

Responding to this issue, SIA said, “No Centralised Treatment Plant (CTP) is being provided by the Government here. The Industrialists have to install the plant from them individually. Uttar Pradesh Pollution control board is monitoring the plants.”

SIA also pointed that the drainage system was made way back in 1974 after which no work has been done on it.

RWA Federation said that there were over 300 polluting industries and about 100 brick kilns in Ghaziabad, and none of them conformed to the Pollution Control Board standards. (KNN Exclusive)
