Maize processing unit to come up in Gajapati District of Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Jun 2 (KNN)  In a bid to promoting livelihoods and empowerment of tribal communities in the Gajapati District of Odisha, Integrated Tribal Development Agency is planning to set up a maize processing unit.
 
The objective of the project is “socio-economic development of tribals living below poverty line, by way of value addition to the natural resources available and the crop taken up by them specifically ‘maize’ thereby not only providing them with livelihoods support but empowering them for taking up entrepreneurships with constant and effective technical support and capacity building to achieve the noble objective,” official data said.
 
The infrastructure “Maize Yard” already in position at Luhagudi in Mohana Block of the Gajapati District will be used for the project.
 
The district of Gajapati comprises of five tribal sub-plan blocks, namely Mohana, R Udayagiri, Rayagada, Gumma and Nuagada.  The tribal family of the blocks depend on subsistence agriculture.  The major contribution to their livelihoods is from farm activities like cultivation of maize. 
 
ITDA is emphasizing on socio-economic development of tribals in Gajapati District creating avenues for employment and self-employment opportunities especially for tribal women / WSHGs through micro and small scale enterprises.
 
Maize is one of the important commercial grains grown abundantly in this district.  It is processed for manufacture of oil, flour, starch, liquid glucose, etc.  Besides these products two other items are very much popular throughout the country, namely popcorn and cornflakes mostly used as snack foods.  Roasted cornflakes is generally used as breakfast food with milk.
 
In this context, the ITDA intends to establish a maize processing unit on turnkey basis by the interested organisations/agency as income generating activities (IGA) through community based organisations like Federation of WSHG members.
 
The objectives of the programme are enhancement of socio-economic status of targeted women families in BPL; empowerment of ST families for availing benefits under various programmes; formation of primary producer groups and primary marketing groups leading to formation of producer cooperative / producer company and federation at the apex level.  It is also expected to provide backward and forward linkages for sustainability of the project.  (KNN/ES)
