Manipuri students suggest govt to set up handloom museum to promote local products

Imphal, April 7 (KNN) The Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) along with six other students have recommended the government to set up a bank or handloom museum to promote the local handloom products.

With an aim to boost the local economy and protect Manipur’s cultural identity, the students have also called for policy interventions focusing at improving the conditions of local weavers and the handloom product.

This recommendations were put out at the two-day academic discourse on 'Eeyong Phee Amasung Manipuri Khunnai' organised by MUSU and six student organisations (AMSU, MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK and AIMS) at MIMS hall, Manipur University.

Adopting a slew of recommendations, the students have emphasised on raising awareness on building up economic nationalism and using handloom products as uniforms of schools and colleges.

The discourse also proposed for using local handloom products in government and private institutions like hospitals and simultaneously ensuring that the handloom products and designs get the GI tag.

Handloom industry is the largest cottage industry in the state of Manipur where most of the weavers who are famous for their skill and intricate designing are from Wangkhei, Bamon Kampu, Kongba, Khongman, Utlou etc. (KNN Bureau)
