Howrah, Apr 26 (KNN)  Howrah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HCCI) is today holding a meeting on ‘Development of Industrial Sector and its Prospects in West Bengal’ for its members here.

Minister in charge of Finance, Excise, Commerce and Industries, Public Enterprises and Industrial Reconstruction Departments, Government of West Bengal, Amit Mitra is the chief guest at the event.

Other speakers include, former MLA and Chairman, West Bengal Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, Government of West Bengal, Dinesh Bajaj; and President, Howrah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Sankar Kumar Sanyal.

HCCI has had an illustrious history.  During 1980s and 1990s when the business and industry were having a plethora of problems with power shortage, labour unrest, raw material shortage, financial constraints in Howrah district, there was no forum or association to take up the causes of business community of the district and to bring them in the notices of the State and Central Government.

Most of the business forums were in Kolkata although many of the businessmen had their business and industries in Howrah. Unfortunately, these forums paid little heed to the problems of Howrah Industries.

It is in this background, a group of young and energetic businessmen and professionals took up this issue and organized an independent and full-fledged Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the district intending to highlight the unique problems of the district exclusively of the trade, commerce and Industry of Howrah.

Thanks to motivated entrepreneurs and professionals consisting of Basudeo Tikmany, Sankar Kumar Sanyal, Mahabir Prasad Shroff, Ramesh Chandra Agarwal, Ram Chandra Agarwal, Baij Nath Modi, Ramesh Chandra Chawdhuary, Bhawani Charan Nandi who, the Howrah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HCCI) was inaugurated on 7th October, 1991.

HCCI regularly organises seminars, workshop and interactive sessions on many subjects relevant to the needs of trade, commerce and industry of Howrah by involving specialists, experts including Ministers and officials of the Central and the State Government.

It identifies problems and possibilities of specific industries of the district and places them before the appropriate district and State Authorities for solutions.  It highlights relating to excise duty, sales tax and other taxes to bring relief to the trade, commerce and industries through interacting with concerned officials at the highest level and acting as pressure group to bring down the taxes wherever possible.

When the rigours of West Bengal Pollution Control Board became overwhelming, affecting the viabilities of the industries the HCCI intervened positively to reduce the impact by motivating the members to accept required pollution control measures to the full satisfaction of the PCB.

Among other initiatives, the Chamber organizes exposure visits to various industrial centres in the country to enable the members to see for themselves the latest technology, modern methods and skills pertaining to their industry and the working of common facility centre at the different industrial clusters.  (KNN/ES)
