Tumkur, Sept 24 (KNN) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the India Food Park here in Karnataka, the project a combination of Central, State and Private Sector Partnership.

Future Group's food park is the first of its kind in India with the group investing about Rs 250 crore in the project. Till date, 50 units have been established for food processing.

Modi said the Union Government was committed to boosting the agricultural economy and empowering the farmers by facilitating value addition through creation of appropriate infrastructure, including rural connectivity, storage and warehousing.

He was addressing a large gathering at Tumkur after inaugurating the Food Park. Speaking about the project, the Prime Minister said it will fulfil the vision of "Annam Brahma" - Food is God.

He said his Government is committed to ensuring that as the farmer provides food for all, he should also get good income for his produce.

"Farmers work to provide for us, but if they are not developed then where will they go? Therefore there needs to be value addition," Modi said. "Mangoes if made into pickles get more revenue for the farmers. Farmers need to be taken to the global market," Modi said by way of example.

Modi stressed the need for preventing wastage of food products. "Preventing wastage of food and agricultural commodities can help save up to Rs 40,000-crore per annum," Modi said. "We will encourage public-private partnership in food processing. I asked soft drink makers if 5 per cent fruit juice can be mixed in aerated drinks," he added.

The Prime Minister said value addition in agriculture and food products is not new to India. In a number of illustrations, the Prime Minister mentioned Sattu, Ghee, Jaggery (Gud), Pickle and even recalled how the ancient sea trade route between India and Europe was referred to the Spice Trade Route.

Modi said that if India is to progress, the Centre and States have to work together as a team for country to progress. He said India can be strong and developed only if its states are strong and developed.

He further said central schemes will have to be implemented by both the Centre and the State working together. Modi said that he will follow India`s federal structure in letter and spirit.

Speaking of India Food Park, he said this project had a combination of Central, State and Private Sector Partnership. He said his Government will boost infrastructure facilities required for the agriculture and food processing sector through Public-Private Partnership.

The Governor of Karnataka, Vajubhai Vala, the Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah, and Union Ministers Ananth Kumar, Sadanand Gowda and Harsimrat Kaur Badal were present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, yesterday Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal had said that the government will approve 17 food parks across the country over the next few months, attracting investments of about Rs 2,100 crore.  (KNN/SD)
