Bhopal, Sept 28 (KNN) The Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB) wants to make an inventory of e-waste in six divisions of the state, in order to recycle engineering waste which may be detrimental to the environment.

With fast growing industrialization worldwide, the growing quantity of electronic waste, known as e-waste is beginning to reach a disastrous proportion.  Industrialized countries all over the world are beginning to address e-waste as it is kept in un-audited solid waste disposal facilities, which are inadequately designed to handle such kinds of waste.

In many cases, waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is being stored, processed, recycled, reused and finally disposed in a manner, which may be hazardous to the environment.

MP ranks among top ten states generating WEEE in India an initial survey revealed.

MP being an educational and industrial belt is one of the biggest hubs for electronic items manufacturing.

The six divisions in which MPPCB plans inventorization of e-waste are Sagar, Chambal, Narmadapuram (Hoshangabad), Ujjain, Rewa and Shahdol.

For effective implementation of the WEEE, MPPCB seeks a detailed study report on inventory of e-waste generated in the State so that an action plan for WEEE can be formulated.

The study will aim to assess the generators and quantity of e-waste according to the E-Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2011 and examine the WEEE recycle system. It will also focus on the risks posed by the recycling system in the present and future.

The micro-level assessment will determine scope of e-trade economics for WEEE and also prepare directory of the stakeholders.

The items to be covered in this assessment include personal computers, mobiles phones, televisions, washing machines and refrigerators including other electronic items as mentioned in E-Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2011.

There is no accepted definition of e-waste in India. Broadly, e-waste has been defined as waste from relatively expensive and essentially durable products used for data processing, telecommunications or entertainment in private households and businesses.

Electronic equipment is one of the largest known sources of heavy metals and organic pollutants in the wastewater stream.  Some electronic products – usually those with cathode ray tubes (CRTs), printed circuit boards (PCBs), batteries and mercury switches – contain hazardous or toxic materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium and flame-retardants which can cause irrecoverable damages to the environmental components.  (KNN/SD)
