MSMEs in Gujarat to approach High Court & NGT against state govt over solid waste management issues

Gujarat, May 24 (KNN) The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Gujarat have decided to approach High Court and National Green Tribunal (NGT) as the state government seems to be ignoring the latter's problems on solid waste management.

Various association in the state, while speaking to KNN said that presently two sites are functioning while the other fours which are ready to use have halted due to some technical reasons.

''Solid waste companies are already working and accepting waste as they have legal permission of the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) but unfortunately, due to some technical reason it has been said that land which are being used is not notified land. Now, this a problem of GPCB not of the operators,'' said Shailesh Patwari, Ex-president, Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industries (GCCI).

He further stated that the land was purchased and environment clearance was given by the authority by unfortunately due to small technical issues created by one of the officers, these lands can't be used now.

''It is a serious issue as industries are generating waste and they can't even dispose it as they are not getting clearance due to some technical issues,'' he added.

Fearing monsoon ahead, Patwari said that if the waste is not cleared before the arrival of the monsoon, then this waste will pollute the city as it will follow into the lakes, rivers, irrigation canal and on open land.

''Due to monsoon, the site will close and will open in October. Now, for the already three months industries have been holding their waste and they are also getting the notices from the authority in this regard which is wrong as they are not permitting to disposed the waste citing that land is not notified,'' he asserted.

He also said that fearing the closure of their units, the people are not going approaching court and looking at Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) FICCI and Gujarat chamber.

''After some days we will definitely going to write to Prime Minister Office (PMO) as well as Chief Minister Office (CMO) giving them seven days’ time, failing which we will be forced to approach high court and National Green Tribunal (NGT),'' he avowed.

Bipin Kaka who is a owner of a solid waste site said that the government should understand that monsoon is on the way and it will create a problem for the industries as well as for the environment.

''The board's chairman is doing nothing in this regard. Often informed the state government but nothing was done in this regard. We have been forced use warehouse instead of using waste sites,'' he added.
