New handloom clusters in Jammu to generate employment opportunities

The mela, inaugurated yesterday was organised by Handloom Development Department J&K in collaboration with Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles New Delhi.
He said that this traditional craft has potential for generating huge employment and revenue for the state and youth should come forward to adopt and promote handlooms in emerging markets, reports media.
As many as 22 registered handloom cooperative societies from various parts of state are showcasing their products in the mela.
Traditional hand woven blankets, shawls, kurtas, coats and other items are the centre of attraction during the five day mela.
The Handloom sector in J&K State is centuries old, known for its specialized weaving of fabrics like Pashmina, Raffal, Silk Sarees and cotton items. The total number of weavers in the state is approximately 50,000 with 14889 in the organized sector. (KNN/SD)
