NGT penalises Pharma Unit in UP, imposes Rs 15 lakh as fine

New Delhi, May 13 (KNN) The National Green Tribunal (NGT) imposed a fine worth Rs 15 Lakh on Teva API India Ltd, a Gajurala based Pharma Company in the state of Uttar Pradesh.  The Pharma unit was found discharging effluents in the open.

The decision was taken by a bench headed by the Justice Swatanter Kumar, NGT Chairperson. The Justice also directed the pharma unit to comply with all the recommendations made by the joint inspection committee. 
For the unit to resume, it is supposed to deposit an amount of Rs 15 lakh with the pollution control board.

This is not the first unit against which the NGT has taken the strict action. Recently the NGT shut 13 industrial units in Uttar Pradesh were found discharging effluents in Bagad river beyond the prescribed limits.The decision was taken after the CPCB submitted a report to the NGT explaining the severity of the issue.

The report further said that the industries in total release as much as 823.1 million litres of untreated sewage every day. Also around 212.42 MLD of effluents are discharged into the river. Also the sewage monitoring plants were found not functioning properly as per the set standards.

Also the UP government last month proposed shifting of the tanning industry to a different location as the tanneries are found releasing toxic waste into the river Ganga in Kanpur. (KNN/ DA)
