No bill for Delhi consumers using up to 200 units of electricity: Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi, Aug 1 (KNN) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Thursday that people living in the capital do not have pay any amount of their electricity bills if there power consumption does not exceed 200 units.

While making the announcement at a press conference, Kejriwal said that the Delhi government will provide full subsidy to those who consume up to 200 units of electricity. Calling his decision "historic", he said that under the "Free Lifeline Electricity" scheme, those consuming 200 units of electricity each month will get no bill.

“Moreover, for those who are consuming from 201 to 401 units of electricity, they will continue to get 50 per cent power subsidy from the government," says Kejriwal.

"People used to pay Rs 622 for 200 units of electricity till yesterday, now it's free. For 250 units they used to pay Rs 800, now they'll pay Rs 252. For 300 units, they used to pay Rs 971, now they'll pay Rs 526. For 400 units, they used to pay Rs 1320, now they'll pay Rs 1075," he added.

This announcement comes just months ahead of assembly polls in the capital. Kejriwal had also proposed free metro rides for women in Delhi.

Calling the day historic for Delhi, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia tweeted saying, "Every family deserves a life of dignity. Just like good education and healthcare, a basic quantum of electricity to run lights/fans at home is essential for that."

Moreover, Kejriwal tweeted that the Delhi electricity sector has undergone historic reforms in last five years. (KNN/LM)
