Bhubaneswar, Jan 17 (KNN)  In an effort to scale up fish production and sea food exports, the State Government of Odisha is planning to improve road and power connectivity to fishing clusters.

During a high level meeting to review the status of fish farming held here recently, Chief Secretary Jugal Kishore Mohapatra has asked the concerned departments to focus on providing infrastructural facilities to 125 identified fishing clusters.

According to reports Odisha has the potential to be number one in shrimp production and export considering that the state has fresh water area of 6.73 lakh hect and brackish water area of 4.18 lakh hect along with 480 kms of coastal line. With such natural resources the state has the production potential of 6.5lakh MT fishery products per year.

Currently, about 2.95 per cent of the state population is engaged in fishing and the contribution of fishery to GSDP is around 6 per cent. This provides livelihood to more than 12 lakh fishermen.  Further, the area suitable for shrimp culture is 32000 hector out of which 16,000 hectors have already been developed for shrimp culture.

Official data also suggests that the total shrimp production in the State has been increased to 168,585 MT in 2012-13 against the production of 133,893 MT in 2011-12, registering a growth of 25.91 per cent.

The state has in place policy measures that encourage shrimp culture.  Further, the land lease policy, provision of subsidy for aquaculture equipment, low power tariff for fishing firms, subsidy for establishment of cold stores, cold chain and reefer vehicles, etc have already been implemented by the government.

Also, the upgradation of Biju Pattanik Airport to international status has enhanced the export potential of frozen and live fish.

During the meeting, Mohapatra also advised concerned officials to review the power connection status to fishing firms and focus on construction of roads, infrastructural facilities and enhance marketing support to the already identified fishing clusters.   (KNN/ES)
