Raipur, Sept 10 (KNN)  Chhattisgarh State Minor Forest (Trading and Development) Cooperative Federation Limited (CGMFPCFL) is planning to rope in the private sector for marketing of forest products such as Cassia tora gum and powder based products as well as herbal extracts and ayurvedic medicines.

The Federation will be setting up a cassia tora processing plant in Nayanpur-Girwarganj in Surajpur District where cassia tora gum, powder and related products will be manufactured.  Capital expenditure proposed for the plant is Rs 484.90 lakhs which will be borne by the Federation.

In addition, a herbal extracts and ayurvedic medicines manufacturing unit will be set up in Raipur to produce different ayurvedic products.  In this case too, the capital expenditure at Rs 1800 lakh will be borne by the CGMFPCFL.

In this context the Federation has called for bids from the private sector to take care of plant operation, maintenance and marketing of products.

Chhattisgarh with 44 per cent geographical area under forest is very rich in biodiversity because of favourable agroclimatic conditions like good rainfall and comparatively less biotic interference.  The state has dense forest cover comprising Sal forests, teak forests and mixed forests.

Forest produce such as Tendu leaves, Sal seed, Harra and Gums-Kullu,  Dhawda, Babul, Khair, Sal seed, Imli, Mahua, lac, Kosa, Mahul Leaves, chironjee Baibaring, Vanjeera, Kalmegh, Aonla etc are used by the rural communities as medicine, and food.

Moreover, the rural communities earn substantial income especially during non-agriculture season through the collection and sale of these produce.

Currently, trade in nationalized MFP is organized and controlled by the Chhattisgarh State Minor Forest Produce Co-operative Federation. The unorganized trade of non-nationalized MFP/Medicinal plants has led to low collection prices to the collectors and unsustainable harvesting of MFP form forest areas. Moreover processing and industrial units are mainly located outside the state.

The Chhattisgarh Government has declared the state as "Herbal state" with an objective to conserve MFP resources including medicinal plants, cultivation of medicinal plants, non-destructive harvesting, promote organized trade and promote MFP based industries for processing of MFP so as to generate the additional employment opportunities in the state and provide health cover.  (KNN/ES)
