Bengaluru, Jan 7 (KNN)  In order to assess the current status and issues affecting the granite and stone industry, the Federation of Indian Granite and Stone Industry (FIGSI) along with the Geological Society of India is organising a national seminar.

The National Seminar on dimensional stone quarrying, environmental issues and community welfare is scheduled to be held here on January-17, according to a FIGSI release.

The seminar will focus on themes such as implementation of latest technologies in quarrying and processing; import export regulations and procedures; environmental impact; corporate social responsibility (CSR); optimum utilisation of resources including zero waste and leasing procedures which will be addressed by experts.

Representatives of the stone and granite industry and officers of the government departments associated with the mining industry will attend the event.

“India has vast deposits of natural resources and it contributes a major share of the revenue generated by the mineral industry.  The export earnings have grown to nearly Rs 12 crore in 2013-14, a 4-fold increase over a decade, even though majority of the states have not followed the recommendations of the Granite Conservation and Development (GCDR) 1999 rules.  There is no uniform policy while charging the royalty by different states and the royalty rates are also very high when compared to other countries.

“The natural stone industry has to be provided with a level playing field in the international market to compete with other major stone producing countries.  In view of these problems, even the processing industry is unable to get the required quantum of raw material to run their plants,” FIGSI said.

However, the revenue share of the industry in Karnataka shows a steady reduction from 16 per cent in 2000-2001 to less than 5 per cent in 2009-10 due to various reasons.
In addition, the industry is also facing tough competition from China, Brazil, Turkey and many other countries.  The event is likely to address such issues.  (KNN/ES)
