Kolkata, Jan 12 (KNN)  To facilitate an interaction between the policy-makers and business community on various aspects of free trade agreements (FTAs) and to discuss and understand the issues and concerns for Indian businesses, a seminar is being held here.

Organised FIEO, FICCI and Ministry of Commerce and Industry (Government of India), the Seminar on ‘India’s Engagement with Free Trade Agreements (FTAs): Opportunities and Challenges’ will be held on January-20.

Various export promotion councils and industry associations will be participating in the seminar.

“India’s growing engagement with bilateral/regional Free Trade Agreements is evident from the number of FTAs concluded in the recent past, with some other critical deals under negotiation. Although FTAs could potentially bring numerous gains for trade and industry, there is a widely-held view that the benefits accrued so far to Indian business from the FTAs are not significant. It is also observed that such agreements pose challenges for domestic industry,” an official release said.

On the need for such a seminar, “…it would be useful to have an interaction between the policy-makers and business community on various aspects of FTAs to highlight, discuss and understand the issues, concerns and opportunities for Indian business,” it said.

Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Sumanta Chaudhuri and other officials and experts will address and interact with the participants.

The seminar will focus on the sectors of engineering goods including machinery, auto components, capital goods, machine tools; steel and metals; chemicals and petrochemicals; plastics; leather and leather goods, footwear and a range of services. (KNN/ES)
