New Delhi, Apr 25 (KNN)  The Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) is setting up a semi-conductor characterisation  lab at Bhubaneswar to help grow the electronic hardware industry which has a significant presence of the small and medium enterprises.

To support the electronic hardware/ESDM (Electronic System Design and Manufacturing) industry in Odisha, the Government of Odisha has announced strategic roadmap for ESDM sector in the State. One of the key initiatives being envisaged is to set up a Semiconductor Characterization lab in association with STPI and Government of Odisha.

The Semiconductor Characterization Lab is likely to boost the electronic hardware industry and to attract foreign investment to the State of Odisha.

In the process of designing and manufacturing of semiconductors, the chips need to undergo validation for its reliability in the lab consisting of various equipment known as Semiconductor Characterization Lab.

Unlike software industry, the growth of hardware industry in India has been slow and steady. This is due to the fact that, the initial investment to be made in hardware industry is very high as compared to software industry and product time to market takes huge amount of time.

The Indian Semiconductor industry stood at USD 6.54 billion in 2012 and is expected to grow to USD 9.66 billion by 2015 as per a report by the India Electronics and
Semiconductor Association (IESA) and Frost and Sullivan. By the time the Indian ESDM market grows to USD 400 Billion, the consumption of semiconductor devices in India is expected to touch between USD 55 to USD 60 billion.

The Government of India has identified Computer Software and Electronic Hardware as an area of extreme focus. In order to give impetus to the Software and Hardware exporting industry in concrete manner and for providing conducive environment to the industry to conduct business at pace commensurate with international practices, Government had conceived the Software Technology parks of India (STP) Scheme and the Electronic Hardware Technology Park (EHTP) Scheme for boosting of export of Software and services as well as building up a strong electronics and hardware industry in the country with focus on enhancing its exports potential and developing an efficient electronic component industry in the country respectively.

Today, over 8000 Software exporting and 160 Electronic Hardware exporting companies under the STPI umbrella, account for the lion’s share of the country’s software and electronic hardware exports.

Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) is a Society under Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Ministry of Communications and Information
Technology, Government of India, established in 1991 with the objective of boosting the Software and Hardware Exports from India.

STPI has been the critical support agency for the Indian Information Technology and Hardware Industry for the statutory services, technology services, incubation services, industry promotion and government interfacing services.

Its industry promotional and service provider role has been one of the key ingredients in the success story of Indian IT offshore industry, which is as big as USD 75. 8 Billion (in 2012-13).

The headquarters of STPI is in the national capital New Delhi. STPI have eight jurisdictions and 53 centres in India. Today, STPI’s member units contribute more than 85 per cent of overall Indian Software Exports.

The contribution of software industry to the growth of GDP of India has been phenomenal. The IT industry has been supported by STPI, Government of India and as a result IT industry has witnessed the significant growth. STPI has helped industry not only as a statutory body in implementing various STP schemes but also in providing data communication and host of other technical services.

STPI facilitates IT/ITES units by providing regulatory services for implementation of
STP/EHTP Schemes, world-class data connectivity, consulting, infrastructure solutions and incubation facilities, which aim to encourage, promote and boost software and electronic hardware exports.  (KNN/ES)
