Sweet war Continues, Orissa to seek GI tag for 'Odishara Rasagolla'

New Delhi, Nov 17 (KNN) After West Bengal was granted GI (Geographical Indication) tag for 'Banglar Rosogolla', Orissa is now planning to apply for GI tag for 'Odishara Rasagolla' which has been claimed as traditional sweet from Orissa.

MSME Minister Prafulla Samal in a press interview  informed that the government will apply for GI tag for 'Odishara Rasagolla' in the next seven days after collecting all evidences and seeking necessary legal opinion as the  government has been looking into all the aspects and also reviewing legal option.

The Minister admitted that there was delay on the part of Orissa government in applying for GI tag because of which the state couldn’t secure the tag and lost it to West Bengal.

Orissa is also seeking GI tag for ‘Kandhamal Haldi’ which is globally recognized and has been certified internationally as best organic quality turmeric many times. More than 50% people depend on turmeric cultivation in Kandhamal district in Odisha. For its production the farmers do not use synthetic chemical inputs and preserve the purity of the soil and their produce during the cultivation.

Odisha already has GI tags for 14 products including Pipili Chandua, Patta Chitra of Ragunathpur among others. (KNN/AG)
