New Delhi, Nov 4 (KNN) Marketing and Irrigation Minister of Telangana, T Harish Rao on Tuesday urged the Centre to increase minimum support price (MSP) of cotton to Rs 5,000 from the existing Rs 4,100.

He called on Secretary, Union Ministry of Textiles, Sanjay Kumar Panda along with MPs B Vinod Kumar, Jithender Reddy, K Prabhakar Reddy and Telangana Special Representative in Delhi.

Rao complained to Panda that the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) officials were not purchasing cotton to the full extent and denying MSP to the farmers.

Only 50,000 quintals of cotton has been purchased by CCI so far against over one-lakh quintals by now last year, he said.

He also requested textiles secretary to relax the procurement norms and open CCI centre with Hyderabad as headquarters in Telangana.

Later, the marketing minister met Union Secretary of Food and Public Distribution, Vrinda Sarup and requested her to extend all possible help to farmers who cultivate maize crop in Telangana under the Food Security Act. (KNN Bureau)
