New Delhi, Aug 28 (KNN) The students of Delhi University surely receive a world class education at low cost but having accommodation in Delhi might burn hole in their pockets.

Delhi University has been holding the position of being at the top since many years and continues to carry the pride.

Lakhs of students go through the hiking cutoffs and enroll for 52,000 seats in different courses in Delhi University every year.

Sky-rocketing cut-offs is not the only hassle for those aspiring to study at Delhi University, but also the shortage of hostel seats which has the students scrambling for private facilities.

“We pay Rs 12, 000 as our college fee for an entire year, but for accommodation, we have to pay Rs 10, 000 per month” said Shristha, a student of Hansraj College.

For the estimated 1.8 lakh students enrolled with DU, there are only about 9,000 accommodations available in its hostels for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The university at present has 15 off-campus hostels and nine colleges with boarding facilities on their premises. Out of the nine, only five have accommodation for women.

The students are of the view that the natives of Delhi look at this as an opportunity to make money.

Isha, a student of Shri Ram College , said, “ The owners and brokers are making huge  profit in the business of providing private accommodation . Also, they keep on increasing the rent on yearly basis without any improvement in the facilities.”

In response to hustle created by students’ against the rent system in Delhi, the government introduced Delhi Rent Control Act in 2005, but until now the execution of the law has barely been noticed.

“These rented accommodations are available in Mukherjee Nagar, GTB Nagar and Gandhi Vihar. The landlords in these areas do not follow the set guidelines for keeping tenants. In Mukherjee Nagar, especially, it seems that the tenant verification process is probably unheard of. Without doing any paperwork, many landlords here are ready to take rent in advance without confirming the whereabouts of the tenant,” said Savio, a student of Zakir Hussain College, who came to Delhi from Manipur.

As inferred from the talk with the students, the quality of the flats and paying guest accommodation has been degrading lately. The food and hygiene are the major concern of the students and their families. (KNN/Jyoti)
