Coimbatore, Jan 27 (KNN)  With the southern power grid now connected to the national grid, the power situation in Tamil Nadu has eased to a large extent and the industries are hopeful that the situation in the coming summer will not be as bad as last year.

“The power crisis last year was so severe that many industries battling long hours of power cuts were on the point of closing down.  But that is not so now,” explained Secretary, The Southern India Mills’ Association, V Raghurajan.

“We will be able to get power from any part of the country now,” he added.

The Raichur-Sholapur 765KV single circuit transmission line was interconnected with the national grid on December-31, thereby achieving the one nation-one grid-one frequency system.  Costing the Power Grid Corporation Rs 815 crore to set up the system, the move will provide a major relief to South Indian states.

With this, the Indian power system has become one of the largest operating synchronous grids in the world with about 232GW of installed power generation capacity.

The move will augment the inter-regional power transfer capacity of the southern region and relieve the congestion being experienced in a few transmission corridors.
Further, it is expected to boost the economic growth of the country.

It will have a great impact on power-starved states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.  (KNN/ES)
