Chennai, Nov 11 (KNN)  In protest against the state's Pollution Control Board's licensing norm, many small and medium units that manufacture packaged drinking water in Tamil Nadu will remain closed on Tuesday.

A hunger strike will also be observed by the Tamil Nadu Packaged Drinking Water Manufacturer’s Association (TPDWMA) that has about 900 units across the state, including 320 in Chennai, the Association President, K Rajaram told KNN.

Explaining their predicament, “The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has a licensing norm that stipulates that each manufacturing unit has to have 2.5 acres land around the unit to allow waste water to flow out.  But we are small scale manufacturing units and we cannot afford to have that much land,” Rajaram said.

Considering that they manufacture drinking water, the waste water that is let out is free of chemical and contaminants.  Therefore members of TPDWMA feel that the clause of 2.5 acres should be removed.

The strike will be observed in Chennai, Madurai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Cuddalore, Vellore, Krishnagiri and Trichy.

The units of TPDWMA produce packaged drinking water in 20 litre cartons and pet bottles.

Founded in 2002, TPDWMA is the sole representative body of all segments of the Tamil Nadu Packaged Drinking Water Industry consisting of large, medium and small-scale manufacturers.

Its mission is to ensure that its members offer the highest standards of quality, safety and hygiene to its customer along with an unimpeachable Packaged Drinking Water. It acts as a catalyst of change in the industry by interacting with the Government on matters of policies that impact the future of Tamil Nadu Packaged Drinking Water Industry.

TPDWMA represents the industry’s viewpoint in matters like Sales Tax, VAT, budgetary structure, monitoring uniformity in government regulations on Packaged Drinking Water Industry compared to other industries, difficulties faced by the industry, etc., TPDWMA also guides its members on compliance with several Government Rules.  (KNN/ES)
