UP open to follow Rajasthan in labour reforms

Lucknow, Jul 24 (KNN) Irrespective of the fact that the parties ruling the two states are political adversaries, the Uttar Pradesh Government is open to follow the Rajasthan model for labour reforms in order to promote job creation and employment.

Samajwadi Party ruled Uttar Pradesh is planning for labour reforms to boost investment in the state and make the state more business friendly.

The state government is working on amending the Industrial Disputes Act, Contract Labour Act, Factories Act and Boiler Act to help boost job creation and attract investment, a senior government was quoted as saying in a media report.

The UP chief secretary, Alok Ranjan said that a committee has been constituted under the principal secretaries of industry and labour along with other departments to study the Rajasthan model, and also to study the models sent to them by the Central government.

He further said that they would see as to what amendments can be brought in labour laws including the Industrial Disputes Act, Contract Labour Act and Factories Act. The study report would be ready by the end of July or August beginning, according to the media report.

Recently, BJP led Rajasthan Government made several amendments in its Acts like - Industrial Disputes Act, Contract Labour Act, and the Factories Act to help create more jobs.

Meanwhile, yesterday Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Vishnu Deo Sai informed Rajya Sabha that the government is actively considering amendments in Child Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act 1986, Factories Act 1948, Minimum Wages Act 1948, Apprenticeship Act 1961 and Labour Laws (Exemption from Furnishing Returns and Maintaining Registers by Certain Establishments) Act 1988. 

"The inter-ministerial/public/tripartite consultations are in progress," he added.

He further said that the amendments in labour laws are considered keeping in view the socio-economic changes in the country as well as other parts of the world with an intention to improving economic wellbeing of the workers and the need to provide a safe, decent working environment harmonised with the need of the economy to be productive and competitive. (KNN/SD)
