Lucknow, Mar 15 (KNN)  With the traditional handicraft sector dying in the state and losing sheen, the Uttar Pradesh government is working on a new policy for handicraft artisans in the state, which will be finalized and launched after the general elections.

“At the moment there is no specific policy in the state for the handicraft sector and the artisans.  Since it is a very important sector, the government had different meetings with all the stakeholders and decided to formulate a specific policy for the sector,” Industrial and Infrastructure Development Commissioner Alok Ranjan told KNN.

“The Handicraft department is working on the policy and it will be finalized after the general elections,” he added.

Handicrafts are one of the key export segments of Indian trade with significant contributions from Uttar Pradesh.

However, the handicrafts sector of UP is faced with several problems such as unorganized marketing and inadequate market information; inadequate support mechanism for product development; power interruptions and other infrastructural deficiencies; inadequacy of raw materials at appropriate prices; lack of technology etc.

Speaking about the need to have a new policy, Ranjan said, “UP is the richest state in terms of handicrafts, but the artisans are not getting adequate returns. They do not have access to latest technology, marketing strategy, and they are many other problems which need to be addressed.”

“We have to address their issues in a comprehensive manner as many of the sections of the handicraft industry are dying,” he said.

The arts and crafts in Uttar Pradesh are famous worldwide. Right from the silken saris to the earthen pottery, carpets weaving to chikankari embroidery, UP is very popular in handicrafts.

Specific regions deal with the specific arts or crafts such as Varanasi for its silken saris, Mirzapur and Bhadoi for it carpets, Agra and Kanpur for their leather craft, Moradbad for its metal ware, Lucknow for its cloth work and embroidery, and the entire state for its pottery. (KNN/SD)
