New Delhi, Jun 6 (KNN) About 110 steel recycling units in Wazirpur Industrial Area of West Delhi have got a major relief from court staying the closure notice from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), according to local industry associations.

Last month, DPCC had ordered the closure of 112 stainless steel pickling units at the Wazirpur Industrial area after they were found releasing untreated acidic discharge into the sewers.

DPCC had ordered Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) and Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to cut power and water supply to the 112 units with immediate effect, while also directing the North Municipal Corporation (NDMC) to cancel their factory licence.

“Court has given stay order on May 26 to the steel units which got closure notice from DPCC,” said President of Delhi Stainless Steel Trade Federation, Jay Kumar Bansal.

“Lack of proper space to dispose the sludge, residual from industrial wastewater, is the main cause of concern here. The court has directed that the units whose Common Effluent Treatment Plant works properly will not be shut,” Bansal said.

Highlighting the problems faced by the industrial units there, President of Stainless Steel Cutlery Association, Vijay Malik from the Wazirpur Industrial Area said, “After the court’s stay order, the process of getting consent from the pollution board is also on the way. Three to four units have already got the consent; the rest have applied for it.”

“The main problem that the units face is lack of proper storage and disposal of sludge, the remains after the treatment of the industrial waste. After the units dump the sludge, residual from industrial wastewater, the civic authorities do not remove the same, leading to the problem of pollution in the sewerage system,” he said.

“DSIDC has identified four to five places to dump the sludge,” he added.

Bansal said that if the 112 steel units close, the 2500 other units which depend on the steel stainless steel pickling units directly or indirectly will also be impacted leading to employment loss of lakhs of people. (KNN/SD)
