Kolkata, June 16 (KNN) One week after two jute mills closed down in West Bengal’s Hoogly district, Congress has asked state chief minister Mamata Banerjee to take steps to save the jute industry and its employees.

Congress MP Pradip Bhattacharya on Monday met the West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi to make the demand.

Bhattacharya pointed that currently 19 jute mills are closed in Bengal, and said the workers, employees and their families were starving.

"The state government should immediately take steps by calling a tripartite meeting between workers, owners and government officials," he said after meeting the Governor, reports media.

Bhattachraya also urged the central government to look into the situation.

The move came after two mills in Hooghly district announced suspension of work last week throwing around seven thousand workers jobless. Northbrook Jute Mill in Bhadreshwar and India Jute Mill in Serampore put up notices of suspension of work.

About 4,000 workers were employed at the Northbrook mill while 3,500 workers were employed at the India mill.

Jute mills have been facing the problems of declining demand for jute and worker problems. These problems forced the mill authorities to shut down the mills. (KNN Bureau)
