Kolkata, Feb 19 (KNN) West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) wants to set up a biogas plant with electricity generation to process the segregated biodegradable organic municipal wastes of Barasat Municipality in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

In the biogas plant, the municipal waste is converted into energy by burning the wastes to generate electricity or heat. The heat released from burning the municipal waste is used to produce steam, which turns a turbine to generate electricity.

The main features of the biogas plant will be - pre-treatment and feeding system; bio gas generator; bio gas cleaning and storing system; and electricity generator.

In this context, the WBPCB has invited bids from private companies to set up a Biogas plant with electricity generation on turnkey basis for processing five tons of segregated biodegradable organic municipal wastes daily.

Barasat is one of the most densely populated districts of West Bengal. Cotton weaving is one of the major industries in Barasat. The trade centre for rice, legumes, sugarcane, potatoes, and coconuts are also located there.  (KNN/SD)
