Hyderabad, Mar 10 (KNN) Towards integrated development of the Andhra Pradesh Mega handloom cluster, Textile Ministry wants to set up Market Development and Publicity Centre; Design Development and Product Diversification Centre; and Yarn Bank in the Prakasam and Guntur districts of the state.

The project is being implemented under the Comprehensive Handlooms Cluster Development Scheme (CHDS).  The Development Commissioner, Handlooms has invited bids from private agencies for implementation of the project.

Marketing has been recognized as being central to the growth and development of the handloom sector in India. Domestic marketing is important for providing linkage between the producers and the consumer. “The handloom weavers, however, do not have an appropriate feedback on market trend. This, many a time, leads to accumulation of stocks causing thereby a bottleneck in the production-delivery cycle,” said a notification.

On the Market Development and Publicity Centre, “the centre is aimed at achieving twin objectives of creating brand and awareness among the people about the cluster and cluster products, through organization of a number of marketing and promotional events at strategic locations throughout the country and providing alternative marketing channels to the craftsperson.”

The Marketing Support Centre will be involved in different market development activities for handloom products like organizing and participating in buyer seller meets; Renting shelf spaces in already established brand stores in domestic markets on pan India basis etc.

“It has been recognized that design is a strategic tool that can provide directions to the crafts in a rapidly changing market environment. Thus, a sustainable linkage amongst designers, technologists, marketers and weavers in diverse materials and locations through acceptable programmes at all levels need to be established for promotion and development of handlooms,” said the notification.

Under the Design Development and product diversification centre, assistance will also be provided for setting up a design studio with computer aided textile design system and a professionally qualified designer.

The weavers in the cluster are mostly dependent on master weavers for work and designs. In  the  absence of any direct linkage with the market, often the kind of designing and products made in the cluster is not in line with the fashion and design requirements of the market. This makes it tougher to sell the cluster products, which generate lesser remuneration leading to loss of income. “It is therefore, proposed to have a design studio in the cluster,” said the notification.

The Textile Ministry also wants to set up Yarn Bank to ensure availability of quality yarn on a continuous basis to the weavers, exporters, entrepreneurs of Prakasam and Guntur districts handloom Clusters at a reasonable price.

Yarn bank will procure yarn from NHDC as per requirement of cluster. (KNN/SD)
