Unemployment Rate In India Drops To 5.1% In July From 5.5% In June: Govt Data
New Delhi, Aug 18 (KNN) India’s overall unemployment rate among people aged 15 years and above declined to 5.1 per cent in July 2026, from 5.5 per cent in June, according to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) released by the National Statistics Office (NSO).
The decline was led by rural areas, where the unemployment rate fell to 4.5 per cent from 5 per cent. The urban unemployment rate, however, remained broadly unchanged at 6.7 per cent in July, compared with 6.6 per cent in June.
On a year-on-year basis, the overall and rural unemployment rates remained broadly stable, while the urban rate declined from 7.2 per cent in July 2025.
Labour Force Participation Improves
The labour force participation rate (LFPR), which measures the share of the population working or seeking work, increased to 55.4 per cent in July from 54.4 per cent in June. Rural LFPR rose more sharply to 58 per cent from 56.6 per cent, while urban LFPR increased marginally to 50.4 per cent from 50.1 per cent.
Female labour force participation also improved. Overall female LFPR rose to 34.4 per cent in July from 32.7 per cent in June, while rural female LFPR increased to 38.8 per cent from 36.6 per cent. However, urban female LFPR remained considerably lower at 25.3 per cent, despite a marginal monthly increase.
Employment Indicators Strengthen
The worker population ratio (WPR) increased to 52.5 per cent in July from 51.4 per cent in June. Rural WPR rose to 55.4 per cent, while urban WPR increased marginally to 47 per cent. Rural female WPR recorded a notable increase, rising to 37.2 per cent from 34.7 per cent in the previous month.
The latest monthly estimates are based on a survey of 3,71,021 people. The July 2026 bulletin is the 16th in the monthly PLFS series, which uses the current weekly status approach to measure employment and unemployment.
Gender Trends Remain Mixed
The overall unemployment rate for men declined to 5 per cent in July from 5.3 per cent in June, while the female unemployment rate fell to 5.4 per cent from 5.9 per cent. However, urban female unemployment increased to 8.8 per cent from 8.4 per cent in June and remained broadly close to its year-ago level.
The data point to an improvement in overall labour market indicators in July, particularly in rural areas, although the relatively higher urban and female unemployment rates indicate that employment conditions remain uneven across segments.
