India, Rwanda First JTC Meeting Focuses on Trade Diversification, Investment & Market Access
New Delhi, Aug 3 (KNN) India and Rwanda held the first session of the Joint Trade Committee (JTC) in New Delhi on July 30-31, 2026, to review bilateral trade and investment and discuss cooperation in areas including critical minerals, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, agriculture, digital technologies and manufacturing.
The Indian delegation was led by Joint Secretary, Department of Commerce, Amit Kumar, while the Rwandan delegation was led by Director General, Asia, Pacific and Middle East Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Virgile Rwanyagatare.
Both sides reviewed trade in goods and services and agreed to diversify the bilateral trade basket, strengthen business-to-business engagement and address market access issues.
India's key exports to Rwanda include drug formulations and biologicals, two- and three-wheelers, industrial and electrical machinery, oil meals, and iron and steel products. Rwanda's exports to India include lead, spices, essential oils, copper, precious and semi-precious stones, processed agricultural products and minerals.
India identified heavy engineering goods, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, refined petroleum products, textiles, marine products, plastics, sports goods and toys, gems and jewellery, and scientific instruments as areas with export potential. India accounted for about 24.5Percent of Rwanda's pharmaceutical imports and remained its largest source of pharmaceutical imports.
Rwanda identified chillies, macadamia, French beans, avocados, essential oils, tea, coffee, horticultural products, minerals and precious stones as priority exports to India.
On investment, Rwanda said India was its second-largest foreign investor as of 2025. Investment opportunities discussed included mining, agro-processing, affordable housing, information and communication technology, manufacturing, healthcare, tourism and financial services. Invest India and the Rwanda Development Board were designated as investment focal points under the JTC framework.
The two countries discussed cooperation in critical minerals, including Rwanda's tin, tungsten and tantalum resources, with institutional cooperation proposed between the Geological Survey of India and the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board.
In healthcare, discussions covered the proposed health-sector MoU, recognition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia and cooperation in traditional medicine.
Other areas discussed included agriculture and agro-processing, textiles and leather, green mobility, digital public infrastructure, fintech, cybersecurity and renewable energy. India also offered capacity-building support through the ITEC Programme, Study in India initiative and Skill India Mission.
The Agreed Minutes of the first JTC session were signed in New Delhi on July 31, 2026. The two sides agreed to hold the second session in Rwanda after one year, on a mutually convenient date through diplomatic channels.
