Piyush Goyal Calls on Japanese Businesses to Deepen Investment in India
New Delhi, Aug 19 (KNN) Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal invited Japanese businesses to deepen investments and partnerships in India, highlighting opportunities in manufacturing, technology, infrastructure, energy and emerging sectors.
Speaking at a dinner hosted by the Uttar Pradesh Government for a Japanese delegation from Yamanashi Prefecture in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Goyal said Uttar Pradesh offers a strong platform for Japanese technology and expertise, supported by its large workforce, improving connectivity and expanding market.
Goyal highlighted the growing strategic and economic partnership between India and Japan, noting that Japan has set a target of investing 10 trillion yen in India over the next decade.
He identified AI, semiconductors, critical minerals, batteries, energy and next-generation mobility as key areas for future investment.
The Minister said more than 1,400 Japanese companies are currently operating in India, while bilateral trade reached USD 27.5 billion in FY 2025-26. Japan is also India's fifth-largest source of FDI.
He highlighted existing Japanese investments and projects, including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, Japanese-assisted metro systems and 11 Japanese industrial townships across eight States.
Goyal said Uttar Pradesh, which has more than 9 million MSMEs and is India's fifth-largest State exporter, offers opportunities for Japanese companies through infrastructure such as Jewar International Airport, Yamuna Expressway and the JICA-supported Western Dedicated Freight Corridor.
The State also has 27 industrial clusters and ecosystems, including those focused on defence, semiconductors and electronics.
He added that he will visit Japan from August 24-27, 2026, to further discussions with Japanese government and industry leaders and strengthen the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
