Farmers' Groups Oppose India-UK Free Trade Agreement
New Delhi, May 8 (KNN) Several farmers' organisations in India have expressed strong opposition to the recently concluded Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the United Kingdom.
These groups argue that the deal poses significant threats to the livelihoods of Indian farmers and the sustainability of small-scale industries.
The FTA, finalised after extensive negotiations, includes provisions that reduce tariffs on various British exports to India, such as whisky, medical devices, and automobiles. In return, India is expected to benefit from increased access to the UK market for its goods, including textiles and food products.
However, farmers' unions are concerned that the agreement may lead to an influx of cheaper agricultural imports, potentially undermining domestic production and affecting local markets.
They fear that without adequate safeguards, the deal could expose Indian agriculture to unfair competition, particularly from subsidized agricultural products.
In response to these concerns, the Indian government has stated that it will not offer import duty concessions on sensitive agricultural items such as dairy products, apples, and cheese under the FTA.
Officials emphasise that this decision aims to protect the interests of Indian farmers and maintain the integrity of domestic agricultural policies.
Despite these assurances, farmers' organizations remain vigilant and have called for continuous monitoring of the agreement's impact on the agricultural sector.
They advocate for the implementation of robust mechanisms to ensure that the benefits of the FTA do not come at the expense of India's small-scale farmers and rural industries.
As the agreement progresses, it will be crucial to balance trade liberalization with the protection of domestic agricultural interests to ensure sustainable development for all stakeholders involved.
