New Delhi, Nov 18 (KNN) India has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with Nigeria, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held extensive talks with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The discussions, which took place during Modi’s first visit to Nigeria in 17 years, focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation across sectors like defence, trade, energy, and technology.
In his opening remarks, PM Modi highlighted terrorism, separatism, piracy, and drug trafficking as critical global challenges, pledging to work with Nigeria in addressing these issues.
Both leaders expressed a strong desire to advance their collaboration in trade, education, health, renewable energy, and agriculture. Modi also offered India’s expertise in areas such as affordable medicine, digital transformation, and infrastructure development.
In a notable gesture, Modi was awarded Nigeria’s second-highest national honour for his contribution to strengthening bilateral ties. The two leaders also oversaw the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at fostering cultural exchange, customs cooperation, and survey collaboration.
India and Nigeria have enjoyed strong relations for over six decades, with significant Indian investment in Nigeria’s manufacturing sector, employing over 200 companies and creating thousands of jobs.
Modi praised the role of the 60,000-strong Indian diaspora in Nigeria, noting their key role in strengthening the bilateral bond.
The two leaders also discussed Nigeria’s role in regional and multilateral forums, including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union, with Modi recognising Nigeria's contribution to the Voice of the Global South initiative. Both countries agreed to work together to meet the development aspirations of the Global South.
Modi’s visit underscores India’s growing influence in Africa and its commitment to strengthening ties with key partners like Nigeria.
