AI Emerging As Strategic Growth Engine For India’s MSMEs: CII

New Delhi, Feb 20 (KNN) Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming India’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), moving beyond large corporations and tech startups to become a critical enabler of productivity, innovation and global competitiveness, according to an article released by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII).

As the backbone of India’s economy, MSMEs are increasingly leveraging AI to streamline operations, automate repetitive tasks, enhance customer engagement and make data-driven decisions. Industry observers note that AI adoption is no longer an optional upgrade but a strategic necessity for small businesses aiming to scale and compete globally.

Driving Productivity and Financial Inclusion

AI tools are helping MSMEs improve efficiency, reduce operational costs and unlock new revenue streams. From predictive analytics in manufacturing to AI-powered customer insights in retail and services, the technology is enabling faster and smarter decision-making.

In 2024, Indian MSMEs accelerated adoption of AI and machine learning (ML), supported by policy initiatives such as the India AI Mission, which focuses on strengthening infrastructure, research and talent development through AI Centres of Excellence.

Programs like FutureSkills PRIME, a collaboration between the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and NASSCOM, are playing a key role in upskilling the workforce in emerging technologies and supporting digital transformation efforts.

AI-powered fintech solutions are also expanding financial inclusion. By leveraging alternative data and intelligent credit scoring models, these tools are helping MSMEs secure access to credit and affordable financing, particularly for enterprises that face challenges with traditional banking systems.

Navigating Legal and Ethical Challenges

While AI offers significant opportunities, MSMEs must address regulatory and ethical considerations. Issues related to patent inventorship, intellectual property, copyright, trademarks and potential infringement risks require careful management.

Industry bodies have recommended that MSMEs adopt a ‘trustworthy-by-design’ approach, embedding transparency, accountability and ethical safeguards into AI deployment.

Leveraging explainable AI models, open-source toolkits and frameworks inspired by OECD and UNESCO AI principles can help ensure responsible adoption. By prioritising ethical and compliant AI use, MSMEs can mitigate legal risks and build credibility with customers, investors and global partners.

AI and India’s USD 7 Trillion Ambition

Strengthening MSMEs through technology adoption is central to India’s ambition of becoming a USD 7 trillion economy and the world’s third-largest economy by 2030.

Estimates suggest that effective AI integration in MSMEs could unlock between USD 490 billion and USD 685 billion in economic value. However, achieving this potential will require coordinated efforts across industry associations, technology providers, financial institutions and policymakers.

Affordable computer infrastructure, interoperable digital systems, targeted skilling initiatives and supportive regulatory frameworks will be essential to democratise access to AI tools and ensure inclusive growth.

With appropriate safeguards and support, AI can evolve from an emerging innovation to a foundational driver of growth for India’s small and medium enterprises, empowering them to scale, innovate and compete in an increasingly AI-driven global economy.
