India Exports First Commercial Sea Shipment of Banganapalle Mangoes to Singapore
New Delhi, Jun 26 (KNN) The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first commercial sea shipment of premium Banganapalle mangoes from India to Singapore, marking a step towards expanding India's horticultural exports through cost-effective maritime transport.
The consignment, comprising 5 metric tonnes of Banganapalle mangoes, was exported by Osum Food Solutions LLP on June 11 and reached Singapore on June 24.
The mangoes were sourced from Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)-certified orchards in Andhra Pradesh and processed at an APEDA-recognised packhouse in Karnataka before being shipped.
According to APEDA, the shipment complied with Singapore's phytosanitary and quality requirements. The Singapore-based importer reported that the mangoes arrived in excellent condition, citing their quality, shelf life and uniform ripening.
The authority said the export also improved returns for farmers, with the consignment fetching around Rs 50 per kg, compared with domestic market prices of Rs 25-26 per kg.
APEDA said the successful shipment demonstrates the potential of sea freight as a cost-effective and sustainable option for exporting fresh fruits, supported by cold-chain infrastructure and scientific post-harvest management.
The initiative is expected to encourage greater use of maritime transport for horticultural exports and strengthen India's presence in overseas markets.
