New Delhi, Jan 23 (KNN)  As many as nine crore consumers have joined the Direct Benefit Transfer of LPG (DBTL) also called PAHAL and so far an amount of Rs 2,262 crore has been transferred as subsidy and permanent advance in over seven crore transactions to the LPG consumers.

The Scheme aims to transfer the subsidy on LPG directly into the bank accounts of over 15 crore LPG consumers.  Towards this, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has been intensively monitoring the roll out of the Scheme at various levels, an official release said today.

“As a result, as on date, 9 crore consumers have already joined the Scheme and will receive subsidy directly into their bank accounts. This constitutes over 60 per cent of the LPG consumers in the country. So far, an amount of Rs. 2262 crore has been transferred as subsidy and permanent advance in over 7 crore transactions to the LPG consumers,” it said.

The Scheme was first launched by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on June-1, 2013 when it initially covered 291 districts.  For customers to avail of the scheme, they had to have an Aadhaar number.

However, on review and after examining the difficulties faced by the consumer, the scheme was modified.  Thereafter, the central government launched a modified Direct Benefit Transfer of LPG (DBTL) scheme in 54 districts in 11 states including all in Kerala on November-15, 2014 whereby LPG consumers who have not yet availed the benefit will be able to get cash subsidy amount transferred into their accounts to buy Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders at market price.

As for the rest of India, the scheme was implemented on January-1, 2015 to benefit lakhs of households.  With the implementation of the scheme, India’s LPG subsidy burden of Rs 48,000 crore is expected to come down by 15 per cent.

Under the system, every time a customer booked a cylinder the government will transfer Rs 568 to the customers’ bank account so that the money would be there in the account before gas reaches their homes.

Each household is entitled to get 12 subsidized cylinders a year. So those who have already exhausted the quota will not be get any subsidy this year.  (KNN/ES)
